SouthEast 2600 Social Committee (of one) Announces First Annual
(unless it's a bust) Canoe Float, Gluttony Festival and Captive Aquatic
Life Viewing Party (CFGFCALVP for those who love acronyms)

Nashville Meet-up
Those of us in the Nashville area will be meeting up at the Park and Ride
lot on Sam Ridley Parkway in Smyrna, at 7:45 AM CST on Saturday. There is a
Starbucks Coffee next door for those that need caffeine infusions. At 8 AM
sharp we will hit the road for the canoe outfitters. Here is
a map with the destination
on it. However, I recommend that rather than following Google Maps'
directions, instead you take Highway 28 until 2 miles before Dunlap, where
you will turn right onto John Burch Road (there's a Canoe sign there) which
will take you directly to the parking lot.
What the Heck I'm Talking About
While it's great that we all gather together every Spring and Fall for
Outerz0ne and PhreakNIC, those events take a lot of work to put
together and aren't of a purely social nature. This, on the other
hand, will be as hastily thrown together as anything with the least
amount of effort! But seriously, folks. I thought it would be nice to
meet up in the Chattanooga area (since it's pretty close to equal
distance from Atlanta, Birmingham and Nashville) for a canoe float,
followed by a late lunch and then possibly a visit to the TN Aquarium.
When It's Going Down, Brotha
Saturday, 23 Jun 2007 starting at 10 AM (Central) in Dunlap, TN. That means most
of us will need to meet up for caravans/ride sharing around 8 AM.
Click on the image of the canoe for their web page - they are on US
Highway 127 where it crosses the river, and having been there before I
can vouch that if you miss the house next to the river with 100 canoes
sitting next to it and about 4 converted school buses parked out front,
well you shouldn't be driving. The canoe float should take between 3
and 4 hours, depending on how much goofing off we do during the six
miles. There's no white water on this one, it's definitely a laid
back, relaxed event.
Around 1:30/2:00 PM (Central) we'll head to downtown Chattanooga where there are several
restaurants capable of filling the holes in our gut. Personally I'm a
big fan of Mellow Mushroom, so I plan on eating there.
By 3:00/3:30 PM (Central) we should be ready to walk across the street to
the TN Aquarium to look at the fishies and the sharks. They don't close
at 6 PM (Eastern), but they do stop letting people come in at 6, so this
will give us plenty of time to see both buildings. After we finish with
that we all part ways and head home.
Also, anybody is welcome to take part in only a portion of the
activities - if you'd like to do lunch and the aquarium, have at it.
If you just want to do the canoe float and lunch, more power to ya.
It's all about being able to choose, as long as you have transportation.
What You Need To Do
First and foremost, decide whether or not you actually want to go. It
would be nice if we could get a single point of contact in each city -
obviously I'll be the one for Nashville, but there's still Atlanta,
Birmingham and Huntsville (possibly the last two acting as a single
group?). The only event that we'll need to get a hard number on for
reservations is the canoe float. I will need that number no later than
1 Jun 2007. There is a $5 per person deposit required, so we'll need
to collect that ahead of time as well. After that, just wait for the
date and then come join us.
You may send your deposit of $5 per person to:
Nashville 2600 Organization
PO Box 1462
Nashville, TN 37013
Make checks payable to Nashville 2600 and in the memo field, write
"Canoe trip deposit for %n", where %n is the list of names for which the
deposit applies.
Cost
Excluding transportation and consumables (food), the cost for the canoe
float (assuming 25+ people) is $19 per person. If we don't get a large
enough group, that cost will go up to $20 per person. I'm sure we can
get at least 10 people to go, which is where the $20 price point comes
from. The TN Aquarium costs $17.95 per ticket, which gets you into
both the older building and the new one with the shark tunnel. Some
people may also want to stick around and watch an IMAX 3D film in the
theater next door, so check the website for more information on that.
